"Redesigning Chris Redfield" Developer Interview
Koshi Nakanishi sits down to talk about Chris' new look in Resident Evil 7.
By Chris Morse
Over the weekend, Capcom posted up a short interview with Resident Evil 7: Biohazard game director Koshi Nakanishi to address the new character model and face of series veteran Chris Redfield. The new look was generally not well-received among fans of the survival horror franchise, who felt that the new face made him look like a different person altogether. Some even went as far as theorizing that the person who showed up in the game was not Chris at all due to how different he looked compared to previous games.
Nakanishi cites new photo-scan technology as the main reason for the appearance revamp. Previous incarnations of character models were hand-drawn and proportionally less realistic. This time, they wanted to go for photo-realistic looks and tried to recreate Chris Redfield based on how they thought he would look in real life. That approach resulted in a bit of a reboot for how the character looks, so it seems likely that the series developers will stick with it going forward.
At least there will be plenty of time for fans to get used to the new appearance after the Chris Redfield DLC, Not a Hero, drops on December 12th as a free download for all Resident Evil 7 game owners. Watch the interview above and let us know your thoughts on the new look in the comments below.
