To nobody’s surprise, the zombie drama has been renewed for another season on AMC.

The latest update on The Walking Dead is a mix of short and long term news with respect to the future of the series. In the short term, we have a brand-new sneak peek for the upcoming midseason premiere that focuses on what we will soon be seeing from the mysterious and dangerous Whisperers. AMC Premiere subscribers are able to watch the episode early, as of last Sunday, but the rest of us are still waiting patiently for the regular premiere date of February 10th.
The sneak peek shows a short scene from the upcoming episode and pits our survivors against a mix of walkers and Whisperers. At any given time, it’s anybody’s guess who is human and who is undead. Expect to feel a lot more uncertainty when season nine returns for its remaining eight episodes and this conflict begins to play out even further.
In regards to the longer term outlook of The Walking Dead, AMC has announced that it has officially renewed the show for its tenth season, as if there was any doubt this would happen, and showrunner Angela Kang marked the occasion with a post on her Instagram account. This will be the first full season without Andrew Lincoln and thus Norman Reedus has unsurprisingly taken the show’s top billing slot, with Carol actress Melissa McBride also inking her own three-year franchise deal.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michonne actress Danai Gurira has also been in negotiations with the network on a deal of her own, but it is unknown whether or not the parties have reached an agreement at this time. After her breakout success that included a role in Black Panther, Gurira is in a position to demand more from AMC, especially considering she is one of the few major characters from the comics who has yet to move on from the television series earlier than intended.
Regardless, the future of the show is still looking bright with this renewal, especially in the wake of its current shift back towards horror with the Whisperers and a fresh start following a six-year time jump beyond the Rick Grimes era of the series.
The Walking Dead will return for eight more episodes on February 10th at its usual time on AMC.
